Open the Gate to veggie heaven

High-end vegetarian dining isn’t a phrase heard often, but with the rise of the veggie and vegan movement, gourmet meat-free eating is a growing trend.

The Gate restaurant, with locations in Marylebone, Islington and Hammersmith, has been promoting healthy eating for nearly 30 years with innovative and fresh menus full of delicious food.

The menus focus on food that is original and tastes great, while being healthy too. With four menus to choose from, you can tailor your visit to whatever mood you’re in. The prix fixe lunch menu offers two courses for £15 or three courses for £18, with a great selection to choose from. We recommend the three onion tart with leeks, shallots, caramelised red onions, finished with balsamic reduction, rocket salad, lemon dressing to start, followed by the shakshuka, which is scrambled tofu seasoned with turmeric, in a North African rich tomato & red pepper stew with cumin, smoked paprika and cayenne served in a cast iron pan.

The a la carte menu has a huge variety of dishes, with starters like couscous and feta fritters to truffle and hazelnut artichoke terrine with sundried tomato and basil salsa, or miso glazed aubergine.

Mains include Aubergine schnitzel with cashew cheese and roast pepper, and rotolo – pommes dauphinoise filled with North African style vegetables and chickpeas.

The Gate’s exquisitely calculated flavour pairings create delicately balanced plates that entice customers back time and time again. There is also a health and wellness part of the menu, which offers two new nutrient-rich low-calorie dishes and a freshly squeezed detox juice for the super health conscious.

Brunch is on offer between 9am and 4pm all weekend at the Marylebone site, and a Sunday roast is available every Sunday at the Hammersmith and Islington sites. Choose from a root vegetable and sage wellington with roasted potatoes and vegetables or a wild mushroom and tarragon roasted stuffed onion topped with mash and served with wilted spinach.

And with desserts such as sticky toffee pudding, soft cappuccino cheesecake and pecan and quince Eton mess, where can they go wrong?

The staff are great and friendly, with recommendations and tips about what to have. The impressive natural wine menu has only organic or biodynamic wines. Classic cocktails and spritzers are also a must for the perfect spring pick-me-up.

The Gate’s website shares new recipes, as well as information about vegetarian and veganism, and what events are up and coming in the veggie world. It also sells cookbooks, tote bags and restaurant vouchers, which are the perfect gift for not only veggies and vegans, but for anyone who appreciates tasty food made with love.
