Hiring in Hospitality

Job hunting can be a daunting task in any industry, so having an insight into how companies go through the hiring process can be incredibly helpful. The hospitality industry is so vast that there are many different ways companies hire staff.

Grind Ltd, the home of one of London’s best espresso martinis, is a rapidly growing company, with founder David Abrahamovitch and his team opening nine sites since 2011. Starting with a small team in head office and the flagship Shoreditch Grind on Old street roundabout, the company now employs more than 200 people. Grind’s head of HR Danielle Borrett gave us some perspective on how a company like Grind hires people and what they look for.

Your role is all about recruiting great people for Grind, what does Grind’s hiring process look like?

We try to pro-actively recruit where possible! We are always on the look out for great people and get lots of interest from our website and Instagram. So when we get a CV we’ll invite them in for a coffee and a chat or give them a quick call to say hi and get to know them a little, then if all goes well we’ll invite candidates in to spend an hour or two with us to experience what it’s like to work at Grind. It’s super important to us that we get the right people in the right places, so we always try to match people up with sites we think will suit them and will build the strongest teams.

What makes a great Grind team member?

We hire great people! Personality is a huge component of the Grind culture, so it must all feel right. We have great training programmes to teach job skills our team might need, so the most important thing is that they have amazing energy and love the Grind vibe.

Grind has been busy, growing from 3 to 9 sites in just 2 years! What’s your strategy for hiring in such a fast paced environment?

Our people know great people, so a lot of our team refer their friends and people they’ve worked with in the past. It’s not all about new people though, we try to focus on giving our team a great experience working at Grind to encourage them to stay with us, whether it’s for a year whilst travelling through Europe or for a career for life!

With many companies having the same attitude as Grind and hiring people through social media sites, don’t dismiss the Instagram or Twitter post you pass by. A random scrolling could lead to your next big break or the start of an exciting new career. Send us your CV today to take one step closer to that dream job.
